REST IN HIS PROMISE by David Ruis

While listening to the Cd "Mercy Over Me" given to us by the team of young people from Toronto last summer, I was struck by the lyrics of this song by David Ruis, who already was one of my favorite song writers. He's written some worship classics, including "Let Your Glory Fall (on this room)," "We Will Dance (on the streets that are golden)," and "You're Worthy of All My Praise."

The lyrics to "Rest in His Promise" remind me of Matt Redman's "Blessed Be Your Name." No matter what the circumstances, this is an encouragement to lift up our eyes and give glory to His name and rest in His promise over us. As world events in New Orleans have shown, life is very fragile. I think particularly of my friend Timm Gearhart's 7 year old son David, who has recently had his appendix removed last week, as well as Howard and Trudy Owens, former France ministry colleagues who pretty much lost everything in the New Orleans flooding.

Rest In His Promise
David Ruis

When the sun’s brightly shining
And it’s touching my face
And Your favor is resting
And it seems all is grace
I will lift up my eyes
And give glory to Your name
And I’ll rest in Your promise
Over me

When the sunlight has faded,
And the darkness my friend
And the sorrows are rolling
and the suffering just won’t end
I will lift up my eyes
And give glory to Your name
And I’ll rest in Your promise
Over me

When the wars and the rumors
Are encircling the earth
And Your judgements are falling
And there’s no where to turn
I will lift up my eyes
And give glory to Your name
And I’ll rest in Your promise
Over me

When the heaven’s are opened
And You ride like the wind
And Your kingdom of justice
It will come without end
I will lift up my eyes
And give glory to Your name
And I’ll rest in Your promise
Over me

You are sovereign, Lord
You are holy, Lord
You are faithful, Lord
